From Marlette who has Nelia, a Hero/Daila daughter, Litter U 2009
Hi Elizabeth,
Thank you so much for sending
me the info on Nico. He’s a male Neila—LOL The consistency of this breeding
is awesome!
Yes, we are very proud to
have her—she is exactly what you said she would be—a challenge and a joy.
I never thought I’d have a
Czech dog let alone one with Neila’s pedigree. I’ve never been a fan—worried
about the energy level and most of all the temperaments—so many are hard
dogs and not in the good way—LOL Neila is high energy and can be stubborn
but with that comes so many wonderful traits—she’s fearless, she’s loving,
she’s curious, she’s got incredible focus when motivated and that nose—oh
my! She’s tough in the best possible way and she has so much zest for
life—VBG
Easter Sunday, 2010, from someone who did not buy a dog from us:
I would
like to share my experience dealing with Elizabeth Kohl and Candle Hill
Shepherds.
My wife and I are not the average dog owners and we take the responsibility
of owning and training
a GSD seriously. We contacted and interviewed MANY breeders and we
heard LOTS of stories. As a trainer and dog owner, one must do proper
due diligence
before
making a decision to go with a particular breeder. Elizabeth Kohl has
proven herself to be an honest person of integrity, a responsible
breeder and a trustworthy and dependable business woman who truly loves the
GSD breed, and who is always striving to improve her lines for the benefit
of her dogs. Elizabeth never told us what we wanted to hear
just to make the SALE. Instead, Elizabeth told us the truth, even when
it meant that she was unable, at the time, to provide us with the puppy we
were looking for.
My
wife and I had spoken to and interviewed countless Germand Shepherd Breeders
in many states, not to mention the many trips we have made to see the
kennels personally, over a years period of time. After speaking in
depth with Elizabeth, she had a clear understanding of what we were looking
for in our new puppy and, at the time, she was totally HONEST and said that
she did not have that particular puppy that would fit our needs and
desires.
If you are unaware, a respectable breeder has a big job ahead of them when
selecting the breeding pair. A breeder must do a lot of research in advance
to find compatible blood lines that will compliment their desired outcome in
their puppies. Puppies are like kids, they are so different. Each litter
produces puppies with very unique personalities. One needs to find a
breeder who possess the knowledge and understanding of the different GSD
bloodlines and the role their genetics play when breeding; one who has a
clear understanding of the different temperaments and how that
determines the best placement for each puppy; one who will take the time and
who is committed
to diligently observing each puppy from the time of birth up until the age
of 8 weeks, testing and making informed assessments. The puppies are usually
marked at birth with different colored rickrack collars for identification
as the breeder records all the information on each individual puppy's birth,
development, and personality traits. Then at approxiamately 7 weeks (49
days) of age, a reputable breeder will have a puppy tester (one who is
unknown to the puppies) perform Puppy Aptitude Testing on each
puppy to evaluate them on the basis of sociability, dominance, and obedience
potential. One such test is called the Volhard Puppy Aptitude Test.
This is essential to match the correct puppy with the correct client.
My wife and I have the experience of dealing with multiple dog breeders and
Elizabeth Kohl S H I N E S above the majority of those. Even though she did
not have the right puppy for us at the time, when the time comes she will be
the breeder whom we will choose for our new puppy. If anyone would like to
speak to me concerning Candle Hill Shepherds, please feel free to contact me
at 303-674-6316. This testimonial was not solicited by Candle Hill
Shepherds. I simply feel moved to share with others the outstanding
service Elizabeth Kohl has given us and continues to give us. Any time
we have a question we call on Elizabeth and she always
takes the time to answer our questions; Elizabeth always calls us
back when we leave a message. I am just an ordinary person who
truly appreciates and respects a KNOWLEDGEABLE AND HONEST BREEDER!
Sincerely,
Michael Mandell

From Kelli who has Kyra, Max/Wessa Litter N 2008,
Hi
Elizabeth--
Thanks
for the birthday card. It is hard for us to believe that it has been
two years also! We love our "Noble Kyra"! She is exactly what I
wanted when I contacted you initially. She has a strong
protective bark and stance, but she absolutely loves people once they get
the okay. She walks with us all over our 21 acres but never runs too
far ahead. She will stop, look back and wait for us looking like, "Are
you guys coming?" There have been stray dogs that come on our property
and she will chase them out but stop at our property edge (no underground
fence). She has such a sweet temperament. And she is so
beautiful--I get comments any where I take her. We have enjoyed her
immensely. Thank you for all you do to make this happen for us and all
the other families who are blessed to find you. We really enjoy your
newsletters, too, so please keep them coming!
I have
included a couple of pictures from our winter here in NC.
Sincerely--
Kelli

4-5-2010 from Christiane who has Dillion, Strongheart/Bree, brother to our Indy
"Dillion is the puppy I always wanted. Sweet and loving and obedient. He is smart and comes every time I call even if he is down in the pastures barking at the neighbor’s dog. What more could anyone want?"

From Tom who has Nico from Hero and Daila, Litter U 2009
Hi. I've been meaning to write and let you know how Nico is doing but never
had any photos to send. Well he'll be 7 months old on the 8th and he is
seventy-two lbs. He is a very quick learner but is a little head strong but
that's ok. He is great with the two grandchildren. So far he is into his
third phase of obedience training and is one month into his schutzhund
training. He shows tremendous drive in learning and shows great enjoyment in
his training. His trainer says he's one in a thousand and shows great
promise.
I can't think of a better dog to have and thank you for your great breeding
program in producing such wonderful pups. I will keep you informed as to how
his training is going.
Your new litter looks great. Thanks again.

From Sue in Idaho with Sasha, a Max/Sara pup 2009, Litter V

Hi Elizabeth,
Here is a photo
of Sasha taken today, April 1. She is such a happy loving girl. Her tail is
almost always wagging. She does have a mischievous streak and you can
see her smile as she tries to herd one of cats. (And avoid getting
swatted on the nose while she does it.) It is so wonderful being able to
have total trust in her with our animals and us. She is happy and
co-operative and will do just about anything(and QUICKLY) for a dog biscuit
or piece of kibble. She continues to develop as a watch dog. She notices
anything new or different in the environment and makes sure we are informed
and checks it out for herself too. The other day walking in the woods with
our neighbor and her 2 dogs, we flushed a couple deer. All 3 dogs started
off but Sasha was the first to stop and return when called. The other 2 are
adult dogs. Boy did she get a treat for that! Sasha is exactly what we
were hoping for. She is a joy to have around and really has been so easy....
We just might think about getting one of her relatives in a year or two.
Thanks for
being so accurate in your advise about which puppy would fit our home.
Sincerely, Sue

From Sheila who has Justice, the Guide Dogs for America puppy in training, Jake/Ulrika, Litter X 2009
Good morning Elizabeth,
Thank you for the link to the pictures. I really enjoyed looking at
all the beautiful puppies!!
Here is a little update on Justice. First and foremost, what a
beautiful dog she is!! I get compliments on her all day long!!
Her color and markings are gorgeous! When she first arrived in
California, she weighed 9 lbs. During our visit last week to Guide
Dogs of America, she weighed in at 28 lbs, and I know she has grown even
more since then. Her temperament and loving personality is praised by all
who meet her. She is very "kissy" and very much a "pleaser." She
doesn't really like to "cuddle" much (I can sneak in some cuddle time when
she is really tired.) but she will give out kisses all day!
Receiving love and praise from me (or from anyone else for that matter) is
something she strives for.
She is doing very well in the Guide Dog program thus far. We just
completed our first 6 week training course and she appears to be right on
track. We begin phase 2 on April 19th. I thought for sure I
would have my hands full with a German Shepherd but to be honest, she has
been less work than my first guide dog, a Labrador. (I hope I am not
jinxing myself right now! haha) From the moment I brought her home,
she has been so wonderful! So smart and incredibly loyal. The
way she looks at me - it just melts my heart. The bond we share, only
2+ months into training, is unwavering. She just loves to be at my
feet or anywhere near me. She truly is an amazing dog!!
I know it is too early to tell whether she will make it in our program but I
feel you picked the best dog, with the best possible chance for success!
She is everything I hope for and more! I cannot wait to see her grown
and mature in the coming months.
Thank you again for taking so much time and putting so much effort into
matching her to our needs. You have an incredible knowledge and most
definitely know how to pick'em!
I've attached a couple different pictures. I was hoping you could pick
one for the website. I really love the one in her vest (8 weeks).
She was such a little pup then. I've also attached a couple more when
she was 13 weeks. I promise to send more recent pictures soon.
Take care. I will be in touch again soon.
Sheila
E,
My past dogs were 2 male
sibling Borzois and a female Dalmatian (not at the same time).
Dalmatians can be quite a handful, but I must say that I've learned a lot
about dogs, patience, and training since then. Having a horse helped a
lot.
Knick Knack Paddy Whack
Give a Dog a Bone carrries, like Boomer, two M6 O2 bottles. Unlike
Boomer, we enter the XXXXXXXX facility of 4700 employees with
NO LEASH. I
never say a word. If she's distracted I snap my fingers. If I
snap and give a hand command her response is immediate. You breeders
in competition deal with dog experts day in and day out, who are critical
and not easily impressed by your peers. My business peers are
non-handicapped people with pets with no public socialization or special
training. One of the many silver linings of being handicapped is the
right to a service animal under the federal ADA of 1990.
My dogs are in training
24/7 since they are by my side. How would you feel, E, to walk into
multiple conference rooms each day with a beautiful GSD at your left heel
linked physically by an 8 foot oxygen tube but no leash? How would you
feel to snap your fingers (if necessary for the dog's attention), and
quickly and silently flash a hand command for sit, down, stay, come, etc.,
with a one second response to the command? How would you feel to hear
the whispers of admiration from so many of the people in attendance. How
would you feel if those simple actions just blew away any ability of all of
those 6 figure salaried employees to focus on the agenda for the next few
minutes? E, I would guess that you haven't had a clue for my world
with the Knicky that you have provided, and the praise that you as a breeder
will never hear.
So, I'll tell you how you
would feel having a terminal lung disease, being considered as one of the
best ever in your (my) very limited highly technical field, and can barely
walk at 55 years of age. You hold your head up high and walk very,
very slowly with a cane and a SD carrying O2 by your side. Wherever
you walk, people stop and notice that something extremely special is being
witnessed. People find solutions to their needs. My solution has been
realized through Candle Hill Shepherds.
You're welcome to use me as
a reference at any time. You know how I feel about Knicky and your
program. I would ask that any reference to 'XXXXXX' be omitted.
How does that sound?
Knick Knack sends you kisses, not like you don't get dozens a day.

From Sara who has Skye from Jake and Ulrika, Litter X 2009 who was in the Five Week Puppy Foundation Program, and Maxie from Max and Wessa, Litter N, 2008.
Hi
Elizabeth,
Skye is
everything I expected and more. She does have such a dear sweet face, very
huggable. She is adjusting very well to our home and loves to sit on my
lap. Maxie is very gentle with her, but I am on constant watch. She is
fascinated by the three cats, but Maxie was too, at first. I put the baby
gates up, so they can get away from her. We had to do that with Maxie too,
but it did not take her long to get used to them, and they to her. In fact,
one of the cats brings things to Maxie. One morning I woke up entangled in
yarn with Maxie. The cat had brought a ball of yarn for Maxie to play with
and then the cat jumped up on the bed several times getting me in the
mix. It was so funny.
Sometimes the cats lick Maxie and put their face in her ears and clean them.
It is so much fun to watch them. They love each other.

From Bill who has Star from Jake and Ulrika, Litter X 2009
Hi Elizabeth. Just a short note to let you know Star and I are doing well. Thanks for everything. It was a pleasure dealing with you. If the dog turns out to be as good as its breeders, I really have a winner. Thanks again, Bill

From Debra who has Jenci from Jake and Dakota, Litter S 2009
"Almost to the one year mark, yeah! I won't kid you it was more work raising a puppy than I remembered but she has turned out to be everything I was looking for in my next dog. Jenci has the most loving personality and everyone who meets her tells me how beautiful she is. However, she does have one quirk that none of my other dog's ever had, she likes to watch TV. You can forget about watching Animal Planet, if I had a flat screen TV, it would be in the floor by now. Thanks again for picking her for me and I promise you she will always be loved and cherished. "

From Susan who has Wiley from Max and Wessa, 2009
"Wiley finished his puppy class last week! He continues to like playing with only one other dog at a time, but occasionally ventures out to groups of pups playing together. He is doing well with the basic things (sit, down, leave-it, drop) and is making progress with "stay". It is hard to stay still when you have so much energy. :-) Wiley also loves tunnels! He charges right through them with no hesitation. I have been particularly delighted by how friendly he is. He loves people, and always wants to greet them, but takes very seriously his self appointed role of "watch puppy". He alerts and barks whenever he sees someone approaching the yard or hears the doorbell ring, but then wiggles around once I greet the person."

Hi Elizabeth, I wanted to send you a note to
tell you how much we LOVE our new dog! We came up with "Lacey"(for
black lace) and she seems to like it too. She is wonderful. My
husband and I, and especially the boys are getting along with her
wonderfully! Of course I'm home with her all day and she follows me
everywhere. She has really adjusted well. It only took 2 nights to
get adjusted and she doesn't whine anymore..(no accidents in the
crate at all) My son was amazed at how well she knows to focus. He
and I work with her every day. I just can't tell you enough how
happy I am to have found you and your wonderful dogs. Thank
you for all of your help through this adventure. Sincerely,
Catherine (We got 6-7 inches of snow last night, Lacey is hilarious
to watch in it!) |

From Sue who has Sasha, Max and Sara, Litter V
Hi Elizabeth,
Hope all is
well with you and your family(2 and 4 footed).
We got Sasha's
papers last week. Thank you. She continues to be a delight. She is so happy,
co-operative and of course, SMART! She is very food motivated so it makes
training very easy and enjoyable. We usually go on 2 walks a day which she
loves. We recently have been joined on a couple by our neighbor and her
adult lab, Clyde. Sasha was quite suspicious of him at first but now accepts
that he really is as harmless and friendly as he seems. On another note,
Sasha is starting to show her watchdog instincts. Any unusual sound and she
will alert or softly woof. We can she her evaluating situations and looking
to us for clues. I am very pleased that she is not just an over the top bark
first , think latter sort of puppy. We are VERY pleased with her. She is at
my feet as I type this, happily gnawing one of her rawhide chews. She is
pushing 30 pounds now and her coat is coming in shiny and soft. She loves
being brushed. We'll send some more photos when her coat is longer.
We are truly
enjoying having her in the family.

From Vanessa who has Tonto, from Hero and Daila, 2009, Litter U
Hi Elizabeth, I just wanted to say hello and let you know that Tonto is doing great. He is a big boy, 38 pounds at 4 months now. He has been attending puppy K and begins formal obedience in late January. He is such a joy. He's also quite famous. On three occasions I have had people stop and ask if they can take his picture when we are out and about.

Lauren from Boston who has Tasha from Strongheart and Daila, Litter T, 2009
Hey Elizabeth,
I have never seen a dog that loves the snow more than
Tasha! She seeks out the deepest part and sicks her head straight in down to
the base of her neck. It's quite a sight.
She also looks amazingly beautiful in the snow, so
after the latest storm I headed out to snap some pictures. I thought you
might like some of them.
She really is growing up do be a fantastic dog. Tasha
is outgoing, playful, smart as a whip and super sweet. I can teach her just
about anything in three tries. She's still very kissy, too. Every time she
gets near my face I get a big wet one. :)

From Robin who has Sophie from Max and Sara, Litter V, 2009
Good
morning Elizabeth,
I am so
thrilled with your puppy. She is so superior to any other dog I've
ever had except my rottie, Ramses. She is so bright and has so much
eager enthusiasm for the world. And she NEVER barks, even when I have
to put her on a tie down while I run. I had to leave her for two weeks
with my parents while I went on the cruise, and of course they don't move
around a lot so she focused on the cats. Mom was convinced she was a
cat killer. Of course she isn't, though she WILL chase when she gets
the opportunity. I think they were just like wind-up toys to her.
She hasn't a mean bone in her body and is utterly fearless. I have
joined the agility club and can't wait to buy the equipment in the Spring
for our huge back yard. This dog is going to BE somebody! And
with so little effort on my part thanks to your superb breeding program.
I have now had a pup from all three of your breeding areas, and every one
has been exactly as you predicted: perfect for someone looking for
agility, family, or schutzhund. Thank you again for such a
stellar dog.
Hi,
Today is the day we brought Phoebe home a year ago, and
we are still so grateful that we have her.
This morning she ran a 150 yard track with 2 corners
and a five foot long puddle of water. I wish you could have seen her
work! She is amazing.
Next session, starting in January, she is enrolled in
Open and a jumping class, plus being my demo dog for the rally class that I
will be teaching.
She is so neat to work with - she thinks obedience is
fun, especially away from home, possibly because Dash (the other dog) isn't
around to interfere.
I'm sure that we will have more of her accomplishments
to brag about next year.
12-1-09 From Marcia who has Raven, Litter R, Strongheart and Ulrika 2008
Good Morning Elizabeth,
Well my beautiful girl, Raven, turned ONE on Sunday. I just cannot believe she has been with me 8 1/2 months. It feels like she just arrived and she has always been with us, all at the same time. Again, I can only wish you love and give you thanks for being the person who was able to give me this wonderful gift. And she is a gift. Though devilish at times, she is truely sent from God through you to bring me love, companionship, smiles and purpose. Cannot buy those things anywhere. We are forever grateful. At the beginning of this most wonderful season of Advent, I cannot think of a better way to enjoy my life and appreciate our maker than to look at Raven and know she is love and created especially for me.
We are forever grateful for all your efforts.

11-13-09 From Greg who has Sheeba from Tag and Jake, 2006
"Sheeba
is doing great. She continues to amaze me in her intelligence and
temper. You have definitely convinced me that a female’s temper is
more than fine.
Sheeba has quickly picked-up on my NOVICE hand signals wherein I can just
point and she goes. The concept that she recently amazed me on
is that she immediately understood thaty putting my finger in front of my
lips means to be quiet. Sheeba’s job at night is to sleep with my
daughter Amanda. This has been great since Amanda was not sleeping
well at night because she is a chicken. So, we decided to have Sheeba
sleep with her at night. Now that Amanda has an 80lb “wolf” laying
next to her, she sleeps like a baby. I often find the two curled up in
the bed wherein Sheeba is Amanda’s pillow. I need to get a picture.
However, this posed a problem when I get up in the morning since I leave for
work around 6:15am. I needed to be able to get Sheeba out of
Amanda’s room in the morning without waking Amanda. The first time I
did this, I put my finger to my lips and said “shhh”. Sheeba
understood and quietly and gently got off of Amanda’s bed and came to me.
WOW. Within a few days, she learned that this “shh” motion followed by
me pointing down the stairs meant that she quietly leaves Amanda’s room and
goes to the back door and waits for me. I love German Sheppards.
I know this may be minor compared to the work of your other dogs, but the
ease and quickness of this amazes me; the amateur.
Sheeba has added a lot of comfort to my life. She is a great companion
and she puts my mind at ease in many situations. I know that while
Sheeba is the most friendly dog that I have ever had, she would give her
life to protect my family. For example, when my kids are sleeping
downstairs or out back, I can sleep better knowing that she is sleeping with
them (she doesn’t leave their side). Nothing escapes her attention.
She is very alert to anything that is out of the ordinary, but makes no
commotion to sounds etc. that are normal. She is also quick to
investigate anything unusual. It is also very comforting to see how
she can go from a vicious sounding watch dog to a docile and friendly dog
when she determines that there is no danger.
Sheeba is a great part of our family and we all love her very much. Thank you very much for such a solid dog. "
11-11-09 From Stephanie who has Vashti, Max and Sara, 2009
"She is not afraid of the horses at all. The horses on the other
hand are "What is THAT?!" I make sure when I am moving them, she is in
the crate I have in the barn for her safety since she doesn't have a fear of
them and could easily get underfoot.
We have had zero accidents in the house. And I have to say I
am impressed as she has already figured out we go outside to go potty.
This morning she actually asked to go out (it was about a half an hour
after she ate) and she really did have to go. Is that smart or what?
I think Dale is falling in love with her. Thought I would let you
know it is going well. Actually the crate training is going much
better than I expected. And Vashti is quite the love. Later.

11-11-09 From Marcie who has Tuvia, Max and Sara, 2009
I just wanted to let you know that we made it back to Dallas safely and Tuvia is wonderful!! On the way we went to my families ranch in Wyoming and stayed a few days to visit. Tuvia is a great little traveler and slept atop a pillow in my lap most of the way. He cried a little that first night but now enjoys the safe haven of his kennel. His favorite toys are his stuffed donkey and a rawhide bone, and now the tennis ball. He is already playing fetch, can sit,and we almost have down mastered. He is brilliant. Thus far he hasnt had any accidents in the house and today twice he went to the back door and sat & whined wanting to go out. At the ranch he got alot of socialization with adults, my nephews who are 5 & 7, and a whole bunch of animals! Tony is working from home the next few weeks until we get into more of a routine & he can go longer between potty breaks. He has a vet appointment on Thursday afternoon.
I dont know what else to say other than to Thank you again for everything. Tuvia is going to be the perfect fit for Tony and I...and Kirin too. It was great to get to meet you. We will keep you posted on the happenings here in Dallas. Enjoy the pictures!
11-9-09 From Robin who has Grizz from Hero and Daila, 2009
oh Elizabeth! This is the most wonderful puppy I've ever had. He looks right into your eyes and you can see his mind just whirling as he tries to figure out what I want. He is so vitally vibrant and his personality is infinitely compelling. He is everything I could possibly have wanted and more.
11-7-09 From Ryan who has Akira out of Hero and Daila, 2009
" Elizabeth, Oh yeah I know, she's my little baby! She comes outside with me, she's doing SOOOOO well, she hasn't pottied in the house AT ALLL today! Just a few accidents yesterday, not many she is definitely super smart! She is adorable, and really something else. She is learning soooo fast it's crazy, she knows "No", "Sit", "Stay", she knows her name which I changed to Akira(Kira). She plays fetch pretty well already, and tug of war of course! She's great I cannot thank you enough, this is actually what I needed!
Thanks!!!!
Ryan
11-7-09 From Ann who is in the puppy raising program for Guide Dog of America, writing of Valor, from Max and Sara, 2009
"Wow, Elizabeth, a winner for sure. Does everyone write you and say that about your pups? I wouldn't be surprised.
Valor was perfect for the plane ride home and displayed all the characteristics you pointed out. She has lots of pizazz and was unperturbed by any of the airport noises. She alerted but within 5 seconds it was, okay no problem. I had her in the crook of my arms and when people came up to greet her, that little tail wagged fiercely. I say that because we often complained that our first GSD never wagged her tail. Lots of kisses for anyone who would get close enough.
I can see you've already started on obedience. She can sit like a champ; she's already learned her name and can come when called. Well, most of the time when whatever she's doing isn't super important to her. I started using her food as treats and she can come running and go right to a down. We did a tiny bit of heeling and the formal GDA come -- all with treats, of course. Oh, and she brings the toy right back and drops it at your feet. Did I say she's perfect? Now,I have to be her "perfect" partner and trainer.
Assuming Valor becomes a guide dog, I'll be back to you in two years to get my very "own" and last puppy.
Puppy kisses and love,
Ann"
11-05-09 From Sue who has Sasha from Max and Sara, 2009
" Hi Elizabeth,
I wanted to let you know how well Sasha is settling in here. She made in through the whole night last night, no whimpering or needing to go out. She sleeps in a small crate right next to our bed. She is already showing that she is quite a character. And compared to our previous shepherds, I can she how agile she is already. She doesn't seem to be that bumbling puppy. She zooms around our living room, jumping over her toys with great glee. She doesn't quite understand yet that the cats don't want to play with her. Bill and I keep her busy with her toys so she gets plenty of play time and doesn't focus on bugging the cats too much. We are really enjoying her and happy with our choice. I'll keep you posted.
....11/11/09 "...She is so smart and wants to please. Her focus is great. Makes
things not only easier but the pleasure that having a puppy is supposed to be.
…I think I have laughed and smiled more in the time since we got Sasha than I
have in all the last year. She truly is a joy. Sue"

From Pat and Jim who have Rika, Ulrika and Strongheart, 2008
"Jim and I talk about you on a regular basis. We really want to come out and meet you and your dogs. We marvel at how you picked the perfect pup for us. We took her on a day trip to the “mountains” near here. She was totally relaxed and quiet in the car. She always has been but we have never had her out for this long. She enjoyed the stops we made and was basically a pleasure to be with all day. We do plan to take her on trips with us in the future and this was the perfect start.

From Antonio who has Stella, from Hero and Dakota, Litter O, one year old.
"Hello Elizabeth, it's Antonio from Colorado. Stella has been a great dog and I'm amazed at her drive and ability to adapt to all the situations I bring her in. Shes loves water and I got her a really cool life jacket to make it a little easier on her. At about 6 months her eyes changed color and from the pictures of her parents she got her dads dark eyes and her moms light eyes. I bring her everywhere I go, and I'm constantly told how beautiful she is. I'm very blessed I found you guys and I'm thankful everyday that I got her, There isn't a thing she isn't afraid of and is always willing to try anything. I've been spending a lot of time training and she learns things in a snap! Once again thank you very much for a wonderful dog,...

" Cooper was in her first dog show, the huge Jonesboro show that falls twice a year exactly when she always would have been in heat (thank you again for letting me spay her!). The first day she beat 30 dogs to win First Place, and the second day she beat 29 for Third Place. One ringside observer, a stranger, told me that Cooper was the happiest worker in the class. I am so encouraged and now have a plan for future classes and shows for both dogs. Did you know about the new classes and titles? The AKC has added Graduate Novice, Graduate Open, and Graduate Utility (I think), as well as Versatility classes and titles, so now I can enter Annie in Graduate Novice at the GSD Specialty instead of Open and still be earning legs toward a title, GN, while Cooper continues in Rally.
Thank you!

From Michelle who has two Candle Hill Shepherds, Liberty (Litter A) and Bravo (Litter L)
Hello Elizabeth
Well it took Bravo a little bit of time to get use to the water a while ago but now he LOVES it and any chance he gets to swim he will jump right in. He likes to run as fast as he can around the fountain then jump in... :) People watch him because he is such a good swimmer, they also watch me train him as well. He is such a show off. I love the foutain and am so happy they have it!

Also again I want to say thank you for being such a good breeder, once again your dogs habe stood out in being in great health and you ACTUALLY care about them and how your lines do. They are true german lines and you guareentee your dogs. I have recommended you to everyone I know who wants a shepard and is willing to do a good job with them.
Thank you for such good dogs

From Deena in Boston who has Lexi, from Strongheart and Baccara, Litter H
Hi Elizabeth,
How are you? I see you have quite a few litters coming up, that's great! I was just telling a friend of mine to keep an eye out for the new puppies, she's looking for her second German Shepherd...
Anyway, I wanted to give you a little update on how Lexi is doing. It had been a while since I'd written and wanted to show you how beautiful she was and tell you a little story. I have a good friend (the one mentioned above) who just lost her husband to Cancer at the age of 41 about 6 months ago. They have two daughters ages 6 and 4. The 4 yr old is autistic. Over the past 6 months she's been over the house quite a bit and Kayla (the 4yr old) loves Lexi! She likes to try to ride her like a horse and Lexi, with the uttermost patience, deals with her and enjoys "playing" with her. We have 4 kids ourselves and she always is at her best behavior but to see her with this little girl who innocently "loves" her really just goes to show how very well mannered a dog she is and shows how well bred she is. Thank you again for letting us bring Lexi into our family, we really enjoy her and she makes us feel safe when my husband is at the Firestation for his 24 hr shifts!
Sincerely,
Deena and Family!

Speaking of Apollo, son of Hero and Dakota, Litter O, 2009
He is well balanced. Friendly with people. Loves children. Strong play drive. Quick to learn. And you’re correct – he’s handsome. Takes after his Dad.

We could not be more
pleased with our puppy. She is an incredible dog. She is, as you had
thought, a very sweet and gentle dog. She is so alert and intelligent.
Everyone who sees her says what a beautiful dog she is and "where did you
get her?" She trots with nobility and runs with such gorgeous grace, and I
mean runs! I've never seen a dog run as fast as she does (in short playful
spurts of joy). I could see her excelling in tracking or agility. She loves
water. We've had some 100 degree weather and her favorite games are with
water. I let the hose run down the hillside and she "tracks" the water as it
moves. She finds the leading edge and keeps pouncing on it. She chases the
hose as I spray it across the yard and loves to "eat" the cold water. If I
fill a hole, she gets her whole face in, eyes and all. Don't worry - I don't
let her jump. But I have to be careful. If I make loops with the hose, she
tries to jump through them. She is not afraid of noises, be it kids,
thunder, trucks, crowds, etc. She is alert, but calm. I visited 3 vets and
found one that is great. All of them have been extremely impressed with her
healthy physique and her wonderful temperament. Her "everyday name" is now
Kiah. We fell in love with her from the very beginning. I want to thank you
with all my heart for giving her such a great start, an exceptional early
puppyhood, for choosing her for us, and for being such a wonderful breeder.

From Abby, age thirteen, who has Gunner from Litter S, Jake and Dakota, 2009. This family also has Roxy from Litter J.
I just wanted to let you know that Gunner is doing amazing!!!!! I love him so much.
He was amazing at school. He did everything I asked him to do and he was really calm too and I only gave him like a 5 minute walk in the morning. While everyone was petting him he just sat there and watched me. Then the disabled class wanted me to come in and say hi and see the puppy. So I did. They were all over him and he just sat there as calm as could be. And next year they want me to come in once a week and I would get out of class. I was like I'm sooooo in if I get to get out of class to hang with my dog. So I'm definitely getting his therapy title on him with other ones.

From Ann who has Kimba of Litter T, Strongheart and Daila, 2009
"She has been very busy. She went to watch her first agility trial yesterday for a few hours and was as good as gold, has been to a few puppy classes and is doing very well - she's a quick learner and I love that she likes to play with toys. We went to a wine festival Saturday evening and she came too - there was a band, lots of people and children of all ages and she behaved really well. She did a small demo at a nursing home a week ago Friday - one of our students invited us to the dog show they were putting on for the residents and we did a very short demo on how we train puppies - she was a star and everyone loved her. On Thursday I went to Raleigh and we did photo shoot, she was awesome. I couldn't believe how she took to the water and she also did very well when we went to public gardens - more people and dog socialisation there too. She is great in the car and there is no more vomiting. We are going camping Wednesday for a few days so that will be quite an adventure. She takes everything in her stride and sleeps all afternoon so I get a chance to catch up on chores etc. She comes to all my classes and is good and quiet in her crate.
Enjoy the pictures. http://www.DianeLewisPhotography.com - go to her blog to see them."

Elizabeth here are a couple of recent pictures of Kya. Isn't she a good looking dog. I love this dog she is so trainable and smart she graduated her puppy class with the highest score going up against older dogs. I was so impressed with her. She really does not spend that much time in the kennel I take her to work with me quite often and she goes everywhere with us as a family what a fantastic dog.
Thanks. You picked the perfect puppy for us we all love her.

From Stephanie in Montana, who has Django of Jake and Dakota 2009, Litter S
"Hi Elizabeth!
Django continues to be a wonderful family member. He is the star of his puppy kindergarten class. He is in the gangly adolescent all-ears-and-paws phase, but if anything is becoming easier and easier to train. He solves little problems that face him around the house at the level of a 3 year old child, and thinks that he is one of the kids.
He stays with them constantly, wants to sit with them on the couch, take a bath with them, go anywhere they go, play anything they play, the only problem is that he has sharp teeth! He has been a real diplomat in any of the many social situations we've put him in. He is just the best, I can see why people become German Shepherd fanatics, he is unlike any dog we've ever had.
Thanks again'

From Maellen in Washington who has Phoebe, Max and Wessa 2008 Litter P,
"Phoebe is everything I wanted and then some. I'm not pushing her training hard, but she is in beginning novice and doing very well. Will probably add beginning rally next session.
Her numerous admirerers say she's gorgeous and she's sweet. She's also funny, intelligent, a bit independent, and a bundle of energy. She still enjoys gardening, and has added wading to her sporting accomplishments.
Took her to the show-n-go last week, and she acted like a veteran in the ring - the precision was not there, but the confidence was. This puppy is going to be so much fun showing that we'll probably go broke paying entry fees!
Oh, yes. We had her spayed the end of April. She weighed 39.6 pounds, and while I realize that she still has growing time, the vet agrees that she'll probably be "petite" - which is another thing I hoped for!
Thanks forever for Phoebe.

5-14-09, from Lauren in Boston who has Tasha out of Strongheart and Daila 2009, Litter T,
Hi Elizabeth,
I just wanted to let you know how thrilled I am with Tasha. She's just a love.
Today she learned how to walk on the leash.
All it took was a few trips around the yard and two treats. She took to it like a champ! She's already taken to walking on my left side almost perfectly. Its amazing for such a young puppy to get it so quickly.
She looks so proud strutting next to me. As we walked into the pet store to pick up some supplies today, the groomer was at the door, She went on and on about how beautiful my little Tasha is and how she could see the good breeding in the way she walked.
Right now she's konked out on the floor next to me having little puppy dreams.
Thank you for bringing this little angel into my life. :)

Kim from South Dakota, who has Auri, a Max/Wessa pup 2008 Litter P, writes
"Hi Elizabeth,
I just thought I'd tell you about training this past weekend. Our local county SAR had multi state SAR dog training here in The Black Hills. The weather was gorgeous (for a change). We had a blast. But the big news is that awesome pup you sold us. Auri started out doing runaways, but they were getting pretty long. I have figured for quite some time now that she has actually been on scent because I don't even remember where the person is and she would always find them. But we started her on actual scent work and guess what? FLAWLESS. The instructor ran behind us with a GPS on Auri's very first scent article find and when she made the find I turned to look at the instructor and she just stood there with a dropped jaw. She'd never seen a dog on their first scent article work do that well. With over 10 tracks, Auri only lost scent once, and she circled around,(I really didn't know what to do), got back on scent and made the find. I'm not sure if she is tracking, trailing, or both (my guess) but she is awesome to run with.
The neat thing about her is that she doesn't need a big "TODO" at the end of the find. The instructor's dogs are very drivey and the only reason they search is that they want the toy at the end of the find. Auri loves the search . She gets to the end and looks at me like "hurry up, lets do another one." I equate it to a good hunting dog. They work because they love the work. Can you tell we all love that dog? Kim

From Stephanie in Montana who has Django a 2009 Jake and Dakota pup, Litter S.
Hi Elizabeth,
We named our puppy Django, (sounds like "jan-go") like Django Fett from Starwars. We just wanted to let you know that he is fantastic. His health has been excellent so far, he is an inquisitive, brave, friendly little guy. He is very focused on us, which is so cool (of course he hasn't hit the bratty teenage phase yet). He is gentle with the kids, but will get revved up and rowdy if the situation warrants it. He hasn't been fearful or whiny about anything (even now in the "fear/avoidance period), but isn't a lunkhead either. When faced with a new situation or creature, he holds his ground, studies the new thing, then checks it out. He and the cat love to torment each other, without anyone getting hurt.
We have taken him to festivals, had him greet visitors at our garage sale, took him to our son's preschool for show-and-tell, ect, and he has taken it all in stride. He is doing well so far with puppy training, sit, leash habituation, ect, picks new things up very quickly, and pays attention to what we are asking and doing. He is very people-focused, which is great. Everyone who sees him out and about falls all over themselves to adore him and they all want to know where we got him...so you may be hearing more from Missoulians...
Hope your Spring is progressing well, and thanks for the great pup...

E.K. from California writes of Sundra, a 2009 Jake and Dakota pup, Litter S.
"Hi Elizabeth,
Today we picked up our puppy at the airport.
She is an absolute delight. When we came to pick her up and the crate was behind the counter I could hear her whimper a little. While the documents were being processed I picked her up, started to talk with her and she really seemed to recognize me I think because of the clothes I'd sent earlier. As soon as I started to talk to her she stopped crying, her tail perked up and she tried to lick my face. It was a moment worth a million bucks! My son and I took her outside, gave her some water to drink and a few pieces of lamb treats. In just 5-10 minutes she was confident, happy, and started exploring the cargo terminal backyard.
The whole car trip although it was rather short our little girl sat quietly and relaxed. When we got home I introduced her to at least 7 different people with each person giving her some treats. My two year old got very excited when she licked his shoes and knees. In short it was a very busy and exciting day. We took a walk after all this excitement and she already recognized and marked the spot where we would like her to perform her duties.
I would like to thank you so much for the care you took in raising this little beautiful creature. She is sleeping in the crate now, let's see how she handles the first night but so far she's been terrific.
E.K. "

From Pat in Washington, D.C. who has Rika of Strongheart and Ulrika's 2008 Litter R
" Today Rika went on a Pet Therapy visit (unofficially). It is the 4th time she has been there but each time in the past I only stayed a short time. The people that we visit are retired military and most are able to get around on their own and are in pretty good shape physically. (I also visit at a hospital but she is not ready for that yet). Any way I went today planning to only stay a short time. Well next thing I know I have been there and hour and a half. The visit was outdoors today since the weather was good. I have to tell you that Rika was amazing. She was calm and very loving with everyone that petted her. She has a sweet way of folding her ears back when she is happy and she did that with each resident that she met today. She was calm and focused despite other dogs being around her. Of course she did try to play a bit but settled down easily. She only jumped up on one person (he happens to be a huge dog lover). One of the volunteers brought a couple of soldiers that are currently at Walter Reed recovering. One of the guys is training dogs as part of his therapy….he does that instead of taking the 9 medications that the doctors wanted to give him. He was smitten with her and put her through a few commands. All in all it was a very moving day and Rika is going to be awesome at Pet Therapy.
As I write this I have such tears of joy in my eyes. I never imagined such a sweet loving creature. She is such a joy to be around….not to mention she is incredibly beautiful.

Greetings Elizabeth!
I wanted to write to tell you Koko has become the love of my life. He is with me everywhere, and is the best off-lead dog I've ever had. Each morning as the sun rises his big nose is on my pillow with his endearing 'ball please mommy?' expression and his huge tail thumping the wall. We go out every day now that it is warmer, and he is everything I could have asked for and more. He is, truly, my best friend. ~~Rebecca

From Wade in Idaho who has Beemer, a Strongheart/Ulrika pup, nine months old
One of the things I love about Beemer is that his barks are different for different things. My favorite is what we call his "man bark." When any of us hear that bark, we all get up and go a running becuase we know something's not right. He uses it when someone he doesn't know pulls up to the house or a stranger (adult) approaches him or one of us unexpectedly. He did it when a police officer friend stopped by the house one night (which by the way, the officer thought was way cool! He wants one of your dogs now!) Beemer also did it this weekend when I took him to town. He was in the back of my pickup and a man just walked right up to the bed and Beemer stopped him cold with a series of barks that that would stop a freight train. I was a little surprised, as he hasn't done that before, but I noticed the man had a little Boston terrier that made the children nervous. If one of us are ever nervous or concerned, Beemer's on high alert.
I've notived that Beemer is a real thinker and likes the opportunity to sense out a person. He is very leary of strangers and is constantly reading us and then the other person to make sure everything is the way it should be. I had someone meet him in the garage the other day and Beemer was watching every move the person made and wasn't comfortable with him until I took him up to meet the person and said everything was fine. Then he relaxed got a drink of water and was fine... but I still think he watches out of the corner of his eye, just in case. We do socialize him as much as we can. He's great with the kids playmates, but children never seem to cause him concern anyway. We take him to the kids soccer games and he meets adults and kids and does great. With the weather improving and soccer starting again soon, he'll be in town 3 days of week for games and practice. It will be good for him to continue to meet new folks.
I know it's silly and you hear it all of the time, but I think I've got the coolest dog on the planet! He's just so awesome! "

From David in Wyoming who has Keesha, a Max and Wessa daughter, Litter N 2008
" Greetings Elizabeth! Thanks for the great photos and for the insight in the process of matching puppies and people! Keesha is doing great and is more a companion everyday. Our son the policeman still wants to abscond with her and train her to search for drugs. We are still adamant that he find his own puppy. We will gladly point him in your direction.
Keesha always likes to watch one of us leave the house. The front window has the best view and there was an upholstered chair in front of it until we decided that Keesha was going to be watching from somewhere else. We pulled the chair out and she used the window sill to support her front paws. Sheila thought a small plastic stool would provide an alternative for Keesha to step up and be able to see out and so she put it in front of the window. You can see that it worked better than expected. We're thinking this should qualify for an addition to the agility trials except for the impact on timing a dog through the course.

Her favorite game now is “find”. We take any toy she plays with and hide it from her somewhere in the house. She “waits” until we release her to “find it”. Sometimes it takes moments and sometimes minutes but she does not give up until the toy is located and then she returns with it to the spot where she was instructed to “wait”. She often brings a toys to us and initiates the game. Maybe we should train her for search and rescue but first we'll have to get in shape to keep up!

From Charlie who has Sangha, a Tag and Jake daughter, Litter E
"Sangha is so much fun to take on trips - which is exactly what we wanted - a buddy to go on trips or just to hang with us around town and in the mountains. Bill's 93 year old mother, who was only used to her husband's hunting dogs, couldn't get over what a well behaved dog she is, not even chasing her old crotchety cat! And she loved that she could give her commands and Sangha would obey......We haven't done all the fancy training that I know most of your owners do, but for us, you picked the perfect dog. It's been a very long time since I've loved a dog this much. Thanks again, and keep up the good work you do matching these fantastic German shepherds with the perfect people for them! Charlie

From Christina in Massachussets who has Jerry from the P Litter of Max and Wessa:
Hi Elizabeth, I just wanted to send you a brief note to tell you how fantastic Jerry is doing. He is the star of his Puppy Kindergarten class....actually the other puppy owners sometimes groan when we are doing our sits and downs and loose-lead walking...."Look at Jerry.... Jerry does everything perfectly" LOL.... He's an amazing little pup. He's a little disinterested in playing with the other puppies and many times instead just lays at my feet and stares at me. He was frightened by the other pups in the first class, but now he just seems more content to stare at me, waiting for his next treat and command/signal, then playing with a pup. Once in a while he gets frisky and plays with a puppy that comes over, but mostly he just wants to sit or lay at my feet, or check out the other humans (he's even fallen asleep a few times amidst all the chaos....now THAT'S a stable puppy!). It's truly amazing and the trainer is SO impressed by him. Conversely, as far as Kayla (Christina's other German Shepherd) is concerned, he is ALL play and he growls and pounces and climbs all over her....and she loves every minute of it. They're a great fit.
Here are some recent pics of them being so good together and doing their downs and sits. He is SUCH a fast learner and now knows sit and down and stay and come and leave it and no bite and let's go (for heel), but mostly he is just enjoying being a puppy! He is a riot with his toys and with Kayla and gives me at least one good laugh a day. I can't say it enough....thank you, thank you, thank you for this wonderful little guy!

Elizabeth, What an amazing girl you sent us. We are totally in love with her. I cannot take my eyes off of her. She was so calm and loving. When I first put my fingers in the crate she backed up then suddenly was wagging and licking. She takes every new sound or challenge in stride and is rapidly figuring things out. She is also very playful. She is as smitten with Jim as he is with her. She slept all night long…not one sound. When I got up this morning she was ready to go and full of energy. I cannot thank you enough for this amazing little girl. ~~Pat

From Michelle in Colorado who has Bravo, Hunter's brother, from the January 2008 litter of Strongheart and Daila. What makes this note interesting, is that Michelle also has Liberty from our A Litter of 2004. Liberty is from our longcoated line which I consider to be a more "golden middle" breeding over all. When Michelle called inquiring about Bravo, she was looking for a pup stronger for protection. Bravo was my pick. But all was not well when he went home. Michelle had a difficult time initially with his extra strength and determination. Here is what she writes after one year:
"Elizabeth,
I just moved to Castle Rock Colorado and am living with a roommate, her dog,and Bravo. One night I was out for a walk with Bravo around 6:30pm. As I was walking home with Bravo I spotted a dark colored car with its lights off. As I approached, the person turned his lights on and started slowly coming toward me. Being new to the area I was very nervous and cautious since I don't know the neighborhood. As you know I am doing Protection work with Bravo (1 year). I was nervous and didn't know if this car would be safe and not to mention a single 24 year old walking alone proabably is an easy target. Anywho, I have been training Bravo in German for his protection. I gave him the work for "watch" or alert. Immediately his demeanor changed from a puppy sniffing around to full alert. Ears went up, tail went up, he completly turned and looked at the car and the person. He was not far infront any longer, he came to a small circle around me and circled a few times without taking his eyes off the car. As the car approached I continued walking. He car came closer and started to roll the window down. I could feel Bravo growling and he raised his hair. I kept walking and the car then went past. I crossed the street and continued to the house. At that moment I was not scared and knew that this dog that caused me so much stress in the beginning would defend me no matter what. I know that if I gave him the bark command that he would bark and know that he was ready to bite if I needed him to and gave him his command. It took a LOT of work but I love Bravo and know that I am safe and sound. I will not go anywhere with out him ever. Thank you Elizabeth. In the early months I was wondering why you picked him for me but now I know and THANK YOU. What didnt kill me, made me stronger and made Bravo and my partnership strong. :) "

From Justine who has an O litter pup out of Hero and Dakota:
"We love her more now than ever, we are surviving puppyhood and she continues to make us laugh with her antics and impress us with her adult like behaviors. She is very aware of her protective instinct with the kids. If there is a stranger in the house she does not leave the kids' side. As you can see in the photos she continues to bring the kids so much joy! It makes her waking up at 5:12 every morning a little more tolerable. She has been very easy to train and really loves people and other dogs. She is certainly everything good in a shepherd. She falls asleep on my son's bed with him and then joins us in our bed. After months of being to little to jump on the bed, she has finally accomplished the last obstacle in the way of her perfect life of comfort. The other dogs make room for her and as a result of being as close to us as possible she finally sleeps through the night. We know it's not for everyone to have 3 dogs in bed, we love it and they do to. We figure they deserve the spoiling and there are a lot of worse things they can be doing. So that's all for now from here. Thanks again for this bundle of joy! "

From Colby in Montana who has Hunter, out of the January 2008 litter of Strongheart and Daila, he writes:
"Hunter is one smart puppy. We have been working on the "stay" command. I
tell him to stay then I take his toy walk across the lawn about 20 yards
set it down on a stump walk back to him and stand in the heel position
and then tell him to go get it. He understood exactly what to do and
just waited for the command.
I hope you like the video
Thanks again for Hunter he is exactly the dog I was looking for. "

From Lee in Arizona, writing about his Service Dog, Knicky (Knick Knack Paddy Whack Give Your Dog Bone Vom Haus Kohl), from the K Litter of Jake and Dakota, born October, 2007.
"I just wanted to let you know that Knicky's coloring is changing about every two to three weeks and she is simply gorgeous! She is an amazing swimmer, everyday for hours on end. She looks like a Mercedes and runs like a Ferrari. She opens and closes all sixteen doors. She had a habit of pooping under the living room Grand Piano from time to time (white carpet no less!) but has been a solid little bathroom (outside in our prefered space) beauty for about three weeks. I have her in a service vest and have begun her introduction to the public. She's a doll. I wanted you to know that Boomer is a constant curiosity to the public due to his size and draws a lot of 'love'. On the other hand, Knicky is becoming quite special. Arizona is home to many retired individuals from around the US and Europe. With Boomer (190 lb Mastiff, also a service dog), people ask about the breed. With Knicky, people ask about the breeder. People regularly approach me to tell their stories of showing German Shepherds and share the pride of their awards perhaps three decades ago. They're obviously far more knowledgeable about the breed than I am. The constant comment is 'you didn't buy this pup in the US'. Knick Knack Paddy Whack Give a Dog a Bone is vested and in public in Phoenix Arizona. Her demeanor easily doubles her physical stature in any situation. She is very quickly becoming a class act. I love my 190 lb Mastiff, and all that he does for me. Knicky is without question, extremely special. She will be the talk of Phoenix. P.S. My condition had become very bad. Steroid adjustments at the Mayo Clinic have somewhat improved things. Swimming daily with Knicky is the best therapy. "

From Whitney and Kayla of the Carroll College Human-Animal Bonding Program, Helena, MT, writing about Tari, their pup from the I Litter of Strongheart and Bree, which they are training to be a Service Dog:
"Tari is a great puppy, she is very bold and eager to learn. So far we have found nothing that she is scared of! She bosses our labradors around as though she was twice their size and she loves to play. She is very loving to her humans, but isn't terribly interested in strangers. She is friendly and will say hello, but she would rather be with the people she knows. We have started a new service dog training class this semester and she is the youngest pup. Our instructor promises outings in wheelchairs, and that the dogs will learn 70-80 new commands such as turning on and off lights and opening doors. She has been a lot of fun and her antics amuse us daily. She has even been a relatively easy puppy as far as crate training, sleeping through the night, not biting, etc. We have been taking her to a weekly "puppy party" for socialization with pups her own age and to meet new people. She is weighed there weekly and she is now up to 27 lbs. She is scheduled to be fixed soon too. Anyway, I wanted to drop you a line and tell you how the little princess is doing."
8-26-2007 From Tony in Nevada, writing of Baron, a Strongheart/Baccara pup, H Litter
"On balance Baron is an amazing dog. In a perfect world he should be riding around in the back of a police car. You really have bred the near perfect police dog. Beyond that I can think of few higher compliments."...in an earlier email, Tony writes: " He is the most beautiful German Shepherd I have ever seen. I take him everywhere and get an extraordinary number of compliments about him."
7/23/2007 Roxy, J litter, Max and Wessa
Greetings from Virginia,
I wanted to give you an update on Roxy (J litter). She is absolutely
awesome. Thank you so much for finding the perfect puppy for our family. I
am amazed at just nine weeks Roxy allows my one year old baby to lay on
her. She is doing great with her obedience, she has down and stay and comes
when called. Her potty training is almost complete, not one stool in the
house, a few voids, and she has been sleeping thru the night within a week
of arrival. All in all she is perfect, I only wish I had got two pups from
this litter. I will get pictures out soon. Talk to you soon,
Laura

note: Roxy came from Max and Wessa, Litter J, our longhaired line.

Strider (Baccara's brother, B Litter out of Arko and Gerta) and Peanut, the Guinea Pig
July 4, 2007 Hi Elizabeth, I just had to email and tell you how wonderful Strider was! The girls had our 3 guinea pigs out grazing foolishly without any fence around it. My one daughter was preoccupied in helping her little sister ride a bike. when I called her for dinner, she was panicked because Peanut, our little guinea pig was gone. We all searched for her for over 30minutes, turning over every bush and scouring the area. My husband was ready to give up and we all knew that she would not make it for long outdoors. Then I thought of Strider, who always protects the guinea pigs. I took him out and brought out the house where Peanut lives and let him sniff it for its scent and said "Find Peanut! Please find Peanut!" He started to sniff the grass and the ground and after several minutes I saw him pawing in the rough where dense prickly underground covering was. I called for everyone and they were digging underneath all the prickles and dirt and leaves and there was Peanut! We were SOOOO grateful. Strider looked happy too and sniffed her and gave her a big lick. Just another ordinary day for him, i guess. What a great member of the family. He guards and takes care of even our rodent friends. Happy 4th of July! Monica

Leo is a F Litter pup out of Gerta and Strongheart, and Hank is C Litter out of Tag and Dagger
Another Leo brag: he sure is growing up into a nice dog. We've started outing him now, and for a dog that doesn't like to let go, he is doing very well. Such self control for such a wild man--that, he still is. Ethan, who works with a 180lb Cane Corso, held Leo on the long line the other day while I was up front and said he had to dig his heals in the ground because he was so strong. Ounce for ounce that dog is a powerhouse! His medium size (ok small if you're comparing to Hank), may fool you, but man is he FAST and he hits HARD. If he's running full speed I get out of the way ASAP because he'll take my feet right out from under me. He is stronger than Hank by far, and weighs at least 25lbs less. I love the fact that he's such business on the field, but when I take him to Petsmart he is CGC guy--loves EVERYONE. If people kneel down, his paws are on their shoulders and he's covering them with kisses, kids especially. And other dogs he is a social butterfly (even more so than Hank). This female GSD who we ran into did not like him much and snapped at him--here I am about to yank him away thinking he's going to chew her up, when he simply turns around and walks away. That's my boy! He's confident enough to walk away when confronted, knowing he doesnt' have to snap back to prove he's dominant. He really THINKS--I love him! He is so much fun to train. Sometimes though, I will admit, he makes me pull out all my hair. I do believe theres a few gray ones from him in there too...lol. However when I watch him work, or when he's so well behaved when I take him out, or when he simply snuggles up close to me at night with his head on my chest, its all worth it. Who needs hair anyway? I love them both--and it pleases me to no end that people like them so much that they want one of your dogs too--that says a lot, kudos to you as always! When I tell people I'm going on my 3rd dog from you, they look at me like I'm crazy, then the next day they are tracking me down to get your information--they simply can't help themselves! Can you blame us!? :) --Ashley (Virginia)

1-18-2007, Sheeba is a pup out of Tag and Jake, Litter E
Things are going very well with Sheeba. She has been such a great dog. Better than we ever expected. We all have fallen for Sheeba and love her very much. She is a great addition to our family. Sheeba shows a lot of interest in Sam, our 5 year old boy. They play all the time. Sam loves to run and have Sheeba chase her - and I think Sheeba loves this game too!!!
I don't think I've ever seen an animal that loves people so much. She always has to be around us - following us around the house and laying or sitting at our feet all the time ! We love that. The kids lay on the floor to watch a movie and Sheeba lays right there with them happy as can be ! Of course, Sam's favorite is when I allow him and Sheeba to lay together on his bed and watch the portable DVD player. They are both in heaven !!
Over the holidays, we had 3 very large gatherings. This was her first test at socializing with as many as 30 people. Sheeba proved her friendliness and intelligence. New Years Eve we invite friends that also have small children, and with about 19 kids, the majority under the age of 6, it was quite a madhouse around here !! Sheeba was wonderful, going from wrestling with our 22 year old nephew to gently playing ball with an 18 month old boy. We were so pleased that she can gauge how rough she can be with someone. We are also pleasantly surprised at how fast she learns. And the kids love that she listens to them (they get to be the boss of someone !!)
We get compliments about her behavior and her good looks from everyone who meets her.
Ellen, Cleveland, OH
I have a couple things to add to Ellen's email. As you know, I had two Shepherds when I was a kid. One of these Shepherds was a great dog and he let me know the potential of the breed. The other was also a good dog but, she was too aggressive to others. Over protective. Based on these two dogs, and how different they were, I was a little concerned about choosing my family dog. I hoped and prayed that I would find one like Zak, our long haired male that was so good. He was the kind of dog that I wanted for my family. We have found that kind of dog with Sheeba and more. She has consistently surpassed my expectations. At only 8 months, Sheeba is a kind and gentle dog when that is asked of her. She is not the crazy puppy that you often see in other dogs. It impresses me how fast she picks up her one word commands and even hand signals. The kids taught her to shake hands. Again, thank you for Sheeba.

Baer, son of Arko and Gerta, Litter B, brother to our Baccara
Congrats on the new arrivals. You are doing such a wonderful job with your program. Baer is still the most wonderful beast I have ever met. I just recently lost my father to complications with Diabetes and when my mother comes over to visit he will come up to her and totally give her loves until she talks to him. Then he looks at her with that Puppy Gleam in his eyes and seems to tell her it will be alright.I will always thank you for the chance we had to have met you and your family,. Even your extended family, ie: the furry ones that run around on four legs. Those puppies are soooooooo cute. Thanks for all that you have done for us and thanks for the updates.

Devon, D Litter, Strongheart and Gerta
Devon's character can be summed up in one word: balanced. As a pup she was never afraid or skittish, always curious and interested but not overly rambunctious and meddlesome. She has matured into a beautiful, social, extremely stable dog. She gets along with all other dogs, always ready to play. She loves children and stays quiet and calm even when they get rowdy and wild. She seems to inherently know who and what to sound her "alert" bark for, never barking incessantly at meaningless or inappropriate things. Her calm, centered manner allows her to come with me really anywhere, whether it be to the local coffee shop, or a loud horseshow, where she is expected in both situations to sit quietly and let people pet her. She is a very quick and sensitive learner, as I rarely have to tell her "no" more than once. She adjusts quickly to different situations such as first running beside me when I ride my horse in a field, to then sitting and staying outside the ring when I take a riding lesson. She is an affectionate, kind animal. She makes us laugh when she acts goofy, she makes me feel safe when I'm home alone with my children, and she makes me proud when people comment on how well behaved and lovely she is. She is a pleasure to own and a true joy in our family's life. ---Elizabeth (Maryland)
June 2006 Hi Elizabeth! I have a funny story for you. I love reading all about all the great accomplishments Devon's littermates and other dogs from you succeed at, so I thought I'd share Devons latest search and rescue triumph. (hehe) My girls recently got hamsters about a week ago. We went out last night and when we got home we found that one of the hamsters had escaped its cage. So, I got Devon and showed her the empty hamster cage, and said "Devon, find it!" And lo and behold, she sniffed and tracked the hamster down the hall to the guest bedroom in the closet. And there was Cola the hamster! Probably not a terribly complicated find in the world of search and rescue, but we were all very impressed. We were cracking up at how Devons' littermates are being trained in all sorts of awesome disciplines and our sweet Devon is being kept busy by finding lost hamsters. However, I must say at the time, it was a dreadfully important task. Though you would get a giggle from that. We did. ----Elizabeth (Maryland)
9/21/2005
Hi Elizabeth! I sent some pictures of Devon. She is doing SO WELL. She is SO incredibly smart. Really, scary smart. She ate dinner the other night and then sat by the door and pawed at it to go out and go to the bathroom. This is at barely nine weeks! She knows sit, come, her name, down (all still with treats, of course). She just beams when she is praised. I take her with me everywhere and she is phased by NOTHING! Not a flinch with horses, tractors, lawnmowers, hairdryers, vacuums, noting - I flinch before she does! She is so solid. Never complains in her crate, just settles in, actually likes it. She is great with teh girls, too. They have been playing with her so much. My older dog is warming up, too, they tear around and play. We get lots of attention wherever we go. One lady today was so smitten with her she took down your name and web aite - she's had many Shepherds her whole life and she was picking her apart and really liked what she saw - she even looked in her mouth! She was amazed at her personality.
Enjoy the pictures - we are certainly enjoying her. Thanks again for such a pup. I will keep you updated! -- Elizabeth

Cheyne, C Litter, Tag and Dagger
Cheyne is sound asleep in her crate. She is a wonderful dog!!!!!!! She already knows her name and comes when she is called. She has acclimated well to the crate and her new surroundings. She does so many cute new things every day that I am keeping a log. My favorite is when she is hot she lays on the air conditioning vent to cool herself off and bites at the air. Cheyne and Shilo get along great now. There was a little tension at first, but now they are best buudies. They walk right beside each other on leash and play and roll around together. Thanks again for such a wonderful puppy. I feel like my family is complete again now that she is with us!!!
Dec 2006 " Cheyne is a joy and I am still amazed almost every day how smart she is. Thanks for breeding such wonderful dogs."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Lexa, F Litter, Strongheart and Gerta,
Hi Elizabeth,
Just a quick update on Lexa..
Yesterday when I was gone, Susie let her out into the kennel but left the gate open so she could get into the garage. She found the recycle bin and pulled out a crushed gallon milk carton and tried to get it out the doggie door from the inside kennel to the outside. But it wouldn't fit. So she tried it twice more and then turned her head and took it right through. Now that is a problem solving dog which is just what I wanted!!!
We have my Mother her for a month and she does not like dogs, however, puts up with the grown ones. She doesn't like Lexa since she is still too enthusiastic when meeting people. However, last night, Lexa was in the living with all of us ( the 3 dogs, Mom, Susie, and me) and she just settled in and laid down on her doggie bed and chewed a bone for a couple of hours with a few breaks in between. She if fitting in perfectly.
All for now, have a great day,
Bill

Lexa is simply a dream dog. She is smart, fun, and loves to work.
She took to the Kong instantly. She flies after it and then races back to put it right in my hands. She has no fear of anything. When Gunny goes out and gets the Kong, she simply takes it away from him. He growls and barks, but she is the one that comes back with it.
We have a lot of guests during the warm weather for bar-b-ques and bon fires. The other 3 dogs have loved it for years since it means lots of people and kids to play with. Now Lexa has fit right in socially and playfully.
She is really a great dog.
Have a great week,
Bill

Clue, C Litter, Tag and Dagger
Gosh Elizabeth what can I say about our dear Clue? As you know, I still call her OUR Clue, as you were her momma first. Many of your dog parents knew Clue as the puppy you saved for yourself from the 2005 C litter. Clue was your pick of the litter, a beautiful long coated and nearly all black female. She was being trained in HRD. What many of your clients don't know is that I was nursing a very ill and very old shepherd who was the love of my life when I first viewed Clue on your website and began emailing with you. You were ushering in a new life and I was easing out a beloved one in death. Our lives were a paradox - what brought you great joy was bringing me great sorrow. So in 2005 I found your website and began watching the progress of this wonderful little puppy named Clue. I had spent some time looking for just the right breeder because I knew my dear one was failing and our next shepherd had some big shoes to fill. Of course, once I viewed your dogs and began a correspondence with you I knew I'd found that breeder! I listened in rapt over this wonderful puppy Clue and saw her pictures on the website. My greatest wish was that we could be getting a puppy just like her! And I can even remember telling my son, "wouldn't it be cool if we had Clue?" Never in my mind did I ever think we would. This was Elizabeth's puppy and we still were nursing our old gal and would see her thru to the end without bringing a new life into the house. We wanted her to be "top dog" until the end. So Clue grew into an adolescent and we put a deposit on a litter due to be born in the spring of 2006, knowing that our shepherd only had a few months left in her. On February 15 th of 2006 we said our final good byes to Asia, our beautiful 13 year old German Shepherd and began the process of grieving. I bought a small puppy bed for the "puppy" we were expecting to receive some time in June as a way to fill the emptiness of not having a dog in our family. A series of events happened that none of us had any control over and our puppy did not come to be. As a result, dear Elizabeth, in her dog wisdom, just knew that Clue was being prepared for us all along. She had felt my heart's desire in all my emails as we came to know one another and offered Clue to me. The short of an already long story is that Clue is now our marvelous dog! She is everything I have always wanted in a Shepherd. She is loving and affectionate, but keen to warn away any uninvited with a thunderous bark. Her personality is inquisitive but not overbearing. She is animated and full of play and drive with wonderful trainability. One day my elderly mother fell outside walking with Clue. Clue was immediately at her side holding her down with one paw until she was sure mother was able to get up again. My son and I are forever grateful to Elizabeth and the wonderful dog she prepared for us.
